Allergies and Hay fever

June is such a beautiful time of year!

Why then do so many people suffer with a thick head, streaming eyes, headaches, blocked or runny sinuses?

Hay fever is a most uncomfortable condition but not to worry, the remedy is here. I can help you.

Whether its raining or sunny outsides, guaranteed this time of year will have many people sneezing and sniffling, feeling bunged up with watery eyes. It can be incredibly uncomfortable to suffer like this. What people are suffering from this time of year is hay fever, the allergy to ‘hay’, grasses, and pollen produced by the many beautiful blossoms, grasses and floral blessings of this time of year. You do not necessarily need to be tested for hay fever. It is pretty obvious if you are okay all year round except for mid Spring time, and June/July when the pollen is at its most prolific and farmers traditionally ‘bring in the hay’ for their animals

According to the UK’s National Health Service website, these are the officially recognised symptoms:

  • scratchy throat
  • sneezing and coughing
  • a runny or blocked nose
  • itchy, red or watery eyes
  • itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears
  • loss of smell
  • pain around the sides of the head and forehead
  • headache
  • feeling tired

Conventional modern medicine prescribes antihistamines as they aim to stop the histamine response in the body. Histamine is the body’s reaction to what it considers to be an allergic pollutant. Histamine causes the blood vessels to expand and the body tissue to swell. The body is having an inflammatory reaction to protect tissue whilst the immune system has a  As we can see from the symptoms, the body is literally trying to expel the pollen by producing mucous/phlegm as in runny and blocked noses, and sneezing and watering the eyes to remove the irritant. Side effects of common over-the-counter antihistamines include sleepiness, drowsiness, headaches and in very rare cases anaphylaxis.

So why would you not want to take antihistamines: Well the side effects can be an issue, for one, caution must be taken with driving especially machinery whilst taking these which can make travelling and working under the influence of these problematic. Also your body is telling you that you have a reaction so perhaps pointing you towards doing further allergy tests. In some cases, it is advisable to check for IgE specific allergies. Fundamentally your body is working normally so why suppress especially when there are other natural methods that can help your body to do what it is supposed to do without suppressing it’s natural process but by greatly lessoning and in some cases completely eradicating the symptoms with the use of herbs.

From a natural medicine perspective, there is so much we can do to help our body to deal with the seasonal pollen without having to suppress the body’s natural responses. To start with digestive health is a must or as the keyword of the moment ‘microbyome’, this needs to be fixed. As you will find from my Immune system course, over 70% of your immune system is contained in your gut. This is such an informative course, more information on this here: Boost Your Immune System in 5 Days Your microbyome is the collection of bacteria in the intestines which keep the balance between optimum health and disease. We can ever so simply help our microbyome by increasing fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kefir, these are food for the good bacteria in our gut. This is a great start towards boosting your body’s ability to deal with environmental irritants.

Herbs are amazing at allowing the body to go through its natural process whilst making it easier for us by minimising or removing symptoms. Did you know that herbs can reduce a fever, boost immunity, calm inflammation and have natural antihistamine effects which means that by ingesting them you can deal with your symptoms as well as the causative factors underlying your sensitivity to the environment. Herbs such as nettle can act as a natural antihistamine, plantain can reduce inflammation and elderflower can clear sinuses and boost immunity. My four year old on a camping trip last year where there happened to be a valley full of pollen, with many people were suffering, my toddler at the time was searching the ground for plantain which she collected to give to people to ease their suffering. There are many formulations out there that can help ease that level of allergic congestion.

One such herbal tea blend is our formula for allergies which taken just 3x daily can really get on top of those symptoms of seasonal allergies and hay fever. Many patients and customers of Heaven on Earth Herbals have reported that “it just saves me during pollen season”, and that ” without it summer is a nightmare”.  If you would like 1:1 help on dealing with allergies and immune system repair feel free to book a consultation or simply pick up a packet of our allergies tea here.

Helping to make your life and Summer that much easier!
